Providence Mayor David Cicilline has won the Democratic primary to succeed Rep. Patrick Kennedy in Congress.
Cicilline on Tuesday defeated businessman Anthony Gemma, state Rep. David Segal and former state party chairman Bill Lynch to capture the Democratic nomination for the 1st Congressional District.
He led his primary rivals in fundraising throughout the race.
He's spent two terms as mayor of the capital city, but entered the congressional race in February after Kennedy announced that he would not seek a ninth term.
He will likely face Republican state Rep. John Loughlin, who held a strong lead in early returns Tuesday.
If elected, Cicilline would become the fourth openly gay member of Congress.
