Rossi has twice run for governor in Washington and lost - including the closest gubernatorial race in American history. He has pulled into a virtual tie with Murray for Senate according to the latest average of recent polls by RealClearPolitics.com.
Murray's first attack ad aims to brand Rossi "the best friend Wall Street and big banks can buy." The ad suggests Rossi opposed the recent Wall Street reform package in the Senate after collecting political contributions from opponents including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Murray is no stranger to corporate contributions ,as a senior member of the biggest spending panel of them all, the Senate Appropriations Committee. She chairs the Transportation Subcommittee, which nearly makes her a hill-czar for highway stimulus money. She's been holding fundraisers and filling her war chest with ammunition from such West Coast corporate giants as Microsoft and Boeing, among others. Murray supported the reforms.
The primary is not until August 17th but President Obama clearly understands that Murray needs help and will make a stop that day for her. Ironically, Murray who's been running as the "Mom in tennis shoes" since she was first elected in the (1992) year of the woman, faces no democratic primary opposition.
Rossi has two primary opponents but is so heavily favored that he is in essence already running against Murray head to head. He has been steadily gaining on Murray and debuts his first ad Tuesday (just in time for the launch of our new website.)
Rossi's first ad is at once biographical and aimed at Washington, it makes no mention of Murray though she is obviously the target; "Growing up, I was the youngest of seven raised on a schoolteacher's salary. And, I worked my way through college waxing floors at the Space Needle. That's why I can't stand what's going on in the U.S. Senate. They're wasting money."
