Congressional Calendar June 24, 2010

After failing in the past, House Democrats will try again to have a floor vote on the DISCLOSE Act, a bill to counteract the Supreme Court’s Citizens United campaign finance ruling. The legislation would require advocacy groups who produce political ads to list their largest benefactors along with other formerly confidential information. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has pledged to vigorously fight the bill if it makes it out of the House.

Senate Democrats have yet another version of their so-called “extenders” bill up for consideration. The bill extends tax cuts and social spending programs that have recently expired. Many members have balked at a price tag that they see as too high, and for the first time, Democrats have raided funds from last year’s stimulus bill to offset the cost of the legislation.

The bicameral conference committee working on Wall St. reform legislation moves its work to the Senate. They’ll be working to resolve differences in the House and Senate bills and hope to finish their work in time to have a final product available for a vote before the July 4th recess.

Members of Congress hold a ceremony at 11:00 a.m. ET to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War to honor those who fought to defend freedom and security on the Korean Peninsula.

Gen. Raymond Odierno, the former head of U.S. forces in Iraq, has a nomination hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee to become commander of United States Joint Forces Command at 9:30 a.m. ET.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, hold dueling press conferences in the afternoon. Pelosi starts at 2:00 p.m. ET, and Boehner follows at 2:45 p.m. ET.

House and Senate leaders hold separate photo-ops in the late afternoon with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. He makes the trip down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol after meeting with President Obama earlier in the day.
