President Obama visited the Gulf coast Friday to survey the damage from the oil spill for the second time since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20.

The spill was one of dozens of disasters that Obama's administration has had to grapple with since he took office. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 106 "major disasters" have occurred since Jan. 20, 2009. That's compared with 62 during the same 16-month period under George W. Bush and 54 under Bill Clinton.

The Gulf visit comes as the administration tries to assert its authority and show the public that it's on top of the problem.
