You’ve heard of “Cash for Clunkers,” the bill that paid people to cash in their gas-guzzler for a more efficient vehicle? Well, this is “Cash for Caulkers.” And now the House has approved $6 billion to help homeowners insulate their properties and install energy efficient doors and windows.
The House okayed the legislation 246 to 161.
Some Republicans criticized the bill. They altered the legislation, prohibiting federal dollars from going to contractors which employ sex offenders.
Other Republicans, like Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., worried about fraud in the program. He pointed out that some home-improvement products available under the program were fake. And he says that a lot of remodeling would have been completed anyway without government assistance.
