WASHINGTON -- The New York Times reports that investigators have new evidence that Sen. John Ensign tried to find lobbying work for the husband of his former mistress.

The revelations came in previously undisclosed e-mails and interviews with company executives.

The e-mails reportedly indicate that the Nevada Republican suggested that a Las Vegas developer hire Douglas Hampton after it sought the senator's help on several energy projects in 2008.

Federal law prohibits former staffers from lobbying for one year after leaving their jobs.
Hampton's wife, Cynthia, was a former Ensign campaign staffer.

A spokeswoman for Ensign told the Times that the senator has clearly stated he has not violated any law or Senate ethics rule.
