Unlike at last fall’s state dinner, this time we know who’s invited to the White House. Here is the list of which House democrats will be attending Thursday's WH health care summit:
Invited by the White House:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (California)
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Maryland)
House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (South Carolina)
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (New York)
House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (California)
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (California)
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Emeritus John D. Dingell (Michigan)
Additional House Democratic Attendees:
Vice Chair of House Democratic Caucus Xavier Becerra (California)
House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (New York)
Congressman Rob Andrews (New Jersey)
Congressman Jim Cooper (Tennessee)
• Note that Rep. Becerra has ties to the most-liberal blocs in the House such as the Congressional Hispanic and Black Caucuses as well as the Progressive Caucus.
• Another interesting attendee is Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN). He ran for the Senate unscessfully against Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) in 1994. 1994 was on the heels of the Democrats’ last debacle on health care reform. Thompson criticized Cooper for crafting a health care reform plan of his own, which he decired as “Hillary Lite.” Cooper’s health care reform efforts proved to be one of the reasons Thompson was able to best him in the 1994 contest.
