President Obama is challenging high school students across the country to a competition to have him speak at their graduation this spring. Students need to answer four essay questions and submit a video about how their school is meeting the President’s 2020 goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.
In a video message, President Obama says that investing billions of dollars in strengthening the nation’s schools will help reach that goal. “Graduation is an important moment for anyone. But a high school diplomat is also important to our success as a nation. “
Students from public high schools need to complete their application by March 15th. After that time, six finalists will be selected by the White House and Department of Education. These schools will be featured on the White House website and the public will have an opportunity to vote for the top three schools. The President will select a national winner from the three finalists and visit the winning high school to deliver the commencement address to the class of 2010.
