DENVER -- Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter won't seek re-election this year.
Ritter, a Democrat, announced his decision Wednesday at the state Capitol. The former Denver district attorney was elected in 2006 in the pivotal swing-voting state.
Ritter has been widely considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. He played host to national Democrats when they held their 2008 presidential convention in Denver.
Colorado Democrats plan a closed-door meeting later Wednesday to discuss a new candidate for governor this year.
Two Republicans are seeking the office, including former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis.
