President and Mrs. Obama hosted their first state dinner Tuesday evening in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Mrs. Kaur.

Here the Obama's await their guests' arrival on the North Portico.

Mrs. Obama wore a gown by Indian American designer Naeem Khan.  

 

 

The dinner itself was held in a massive tent on the South Lawn of the White House - far better to accomodate the 300 plus guests.   Here, President Obama listens as Prime Minister Singh gives a toast.  

 

“Mr. President your leadership of this great nation of the United States coincides with a time of profound changes taking place in world at large," said Mr. Singh.  "We need to find new pathways of international cooperation that respond more effectively to the grave challenges caused by the growing interdependence of nations.

"I wish you and the people of America a very, very, happy Thanksgiving. ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to join me in a toast to the health and happiness of President Barack Obama and the First Lady, Mrs. Obama, the friendly people of the United States of America and stronger and stronger friendship between India and the United States of America.”
