Jewish Group Protests Florida Passover Election Date

Shalom International wants Gov. Charlie Crist to change the date of a special congressional election in South Florida because it falls on the last day of Passover.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Jewish group wants Gov. Charlie Crist to change the date of a special congressional election in South Florida because it falls on the last day of Passover.

Crist, a Republican, has set the election for April 6 to replace Democratic Rep. Robert Wexler.

The Boca Raton congressman is resigning in January to become president of the Center for Middle East Peace.

Bob Kunst, president of Shalom International, wrote Crist a letter Monday saying the election date is an "attack upon the religious Jewish community."

Crist said he wants to revisit the date and see if it can be switched.

Four Republicans and three Democrats are running in the heavily Jewish 19th District. Two of those candidates, both Democrats, are Jewish, as is Wexler.
