Olsen is a career civil servant.

Before his appointment earlier this year, Olsen served as the acting assistant attorney general for national security, where he managed the Justice Department's National Security Division.

He previously served as the chief of the national security section in the U.S. Attorney's office in Washington where he supervised prosecutions involving terrorism, espionage and export violations.

Before that, Olsen served as special counsel to the FBI director and worked primarily on national security policy matters.

Olsen holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and a law degree from Harvard Law School.
