Breeder of First Dog Bo Dies

BOYD, Texas -- The owner of a Texas kennel where first dog Bo was bred has died.

A memorial service was scheduled Monday in Dallas for Martha B. Watson Stern, of Boyd.

Stern, 72, died July 21 at a hospital in Charlottesville., Va., where she and her husband, Art, had a summer home. Her obituary did not list a cause of death.

Art Stern told the Dallas Morning News that the couple became interested in Portuguese water dogs while watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in the 1980s.

The Sterns drew attention in April as breeders of the Portuguese water dog that became the pet of President Obama, his wife and their two daughters.

Stern was a Waxahachie native who grew up in Dallas.
