Republican congressman announces he will step into statewide politics.

DETROIT -- Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra says he's running for Michigan governor.

The 55-year-old from Holland made the announcement Monday morning on WJR-AM's Paul W. Smith program.

Hoekstra says he plans to file formal paperwork Monday afternoon in Lansing.

He says the state needs a new vision.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm can't run for re-election because  of term limits.
