Veteran Congresswoman Nita Lowey has taken herself out of the running to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate.

Lowey revealed her decision in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday. The move leaves a dozen or more New York politicians still hopeful of being picked.

Lowey told the AP by phone that she isn't interested in giving up a hard-earned seniority seat on the House Appropriations Committee -- a position which gives her great latitude over the budget of the State Department that Clinton likely will soon lead.

Lowey had been expected to seek the Senate seat back in 2000, but stepped aside for Clinton, then the first lady.
