Rep. John Dingell, the longest-serving current member of Congress, has been admitted to a Washington-area hospital after feeling ill.

The Michigan congressman was fully conscious and was admitted as a precautionary measure on Tuesday, according to Dingell aides. He had been working in his Capitol Hill office when he decided to seek medical treatment.

He was expected to return to work in a day or so, his office said.

Dingell spokesman Adam Benson says the 82-year-old congressman was joking with his staff from his cell phone en route to the hospital.
