Sept. 29: Pirates holding Ukrainian-operated ship Faina off the coast of Somalia receive supplies while under observation by the guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf. U.S. warships and helicopters on Monday surrounded the hijacked cargo ship which is loaded with Sudan-bound tanks and other arms, to keep the weapons from falling 'into the wrong hands,' an American Navy spokesman said. The pirates who seized the ship Thursday are demanding a $20 million ransom.
