Britney was going to win, she had it in the bag. Then she started wearing a tophat on tour - again. And then she sang with Madonna - again. We started feeling a sense of deja vu, that she was not so much having a comeback, but repeating all of her old tricks. We did love her caroling with Ellen, though.

Nobody tried harder to be famous in 2008 than Heidi Montag. She set up paparazzi photo opportunities, including one where she let Spencer Pratt oil her body up on the beach, she started a clothing line, she sang a little, she eloped for her TV show and US Magazine. A+ for effort. She's just got to get herself off the D-list somehow, and we don't see how.

Angelina Jolie did everything right in 2008. She had twins with Brad Pitt. She was in a Clint Eastwood movie. She worked her butt off modeling at classic car conventions like the one above. But she didn't do anything controversial. Kind of a yawner year in that regard.. We needs some juice, Angie!

Cleaning up and starting a same-sex relationship were both huge news getters. But the kerfuffle she caused on "Ugly Betty" didn't help - seeing her get beat down by a lowly network TV star cost her some famous points.

This could have been the year of Scarlett. She worked more red carpets than any other A-lister outside of Angelina Jolie. But too many of her films bombed, and her relentless pursuit of personal privacy (she got married and hardly anybody even noticed) ended her chances at being the Most Famous, Famous Gal of 2008. Maybe next year, ScarJo.
