Falling snow and a high threat of avalanches convinced officials to close three main east-west mountain passes in Washington state on New Year's Day and at least two of the highways were expected to remain shut down into Friday.
• Dec. 28, 2008: With one light pole already down, a second teeters on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. Tens of thousands of customers were without power Sunday in Michigan after high winds hit the state, knocking down tree limbs and power lines. A high wind advisory was in effect, and gusts about 50 mph were reported.
