  • "Caprica," a prequel to "Battlestar Galactica," will debut on SciFi in 2010. Will it attain "clssic" status like the following spin-offs?
  • "Angel" spun off of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and lasted five seasons before it got the silver bullet.
  • Stephen Colbert was a regular character/contributor on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" before he spread his wings and flew like a majestic bald eagle over to his own Comedy Central show, "The Colbert Report."
  • Little Scrappy Doo was so irresistable on "Scooby Doo,", he and Uncle Scoob headlined their own "The Scooby and Scrappy Doo Hour" in 1980. Good times.
  • Love him or hate him, Dr. Phil rode Oprah's coattails like a pro, all the way from her guest chair to his own show, "The Dr. Phil Show."
  • "Kiss my grits!" Flo's awesome catch phrase on Alice became the rallying cry of a generation, and helped her make the leap to her own sitcom, "Flo," which crashed and burned. But it was still a classic. Extra credit - what's Flo's real name? Answer: Jean "Flo" Castleberry.
  • Rarely does a minor character become a major character and then get his own show upon the demise of his former sitcom. That's what happened to Frasier, whose character on "Cheers" went from a guest starring role to a regular role, and then on to his own self-titled sitcom, which lasted 11 seasons.

  • Mork from Ork invaded the Cunninghams' house on "Happy Days" before shacking up with Mindy on "Mork and Mindy." The alien and human wed in their fifth season, and that was that. Shazbot.
  • George and Louise Jefferson started as neighbors of the racist-with-a-heart-of-gold Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" before moving on up to the east side, to a deluxe apartment int he sky, on "The Jeffersons."
  • Edna Garrett started as Arnold's housekeeper on "Diff'rent Strokes" before getting her own show, the inimitable "Facts of Life," which ran a whopping 10 years. You go Edna!
