Yaron Svoray scrapes caked layers of dirt from a shard of glass, revealing a sunflower at the heart of a Star of David. He carefully turns it, speculating it may have been a bowl used for Passover ceremonies in pre-World War II German Jewish homes.
• Oct. 28: A Turkish girl plays with balloons at the historical Grand Bazaar which is decorated by national flags on the occasion of the Republic Day in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkey celebrates Republic Day on Wednesday, which marks the 85th anniversary of the Turkish Republic.
• Oct. 28: Tiny Virginia Makopo appears at the Seboken Magistrate Court, south of Johannesburg, South Africa. Makopo, a former dormitory matron at Oprah Winfrey's School for disadvantaged girls, pleaded innocent to charges that she indecently assaulted and otherwise abused six teenagers and a fellow matron at the academy.
• Oct. 28: Former rebel of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia or FARC, Wilson Bueno Largo alias "Isaza", talks during a press conference at the Defense Ministry building in Bogota. Bueno, former jailer of FARC hostage Oscar Tulio Lizcano, will receive a reward of about US$400,000 after helping Lizcano to escape from captivity on Sunday.
• Oct. 28: Syahhrial Rozali, the current resident of the house where U.S. Presidential Candidate Barrack Obama lived as a child, walks in front of the home in Jakarta, Indonesia. Anticipation that Barack Obama may soon be the next U.S. president has sent a steady stream of visitors to the colonial-era house he lived in as a child, from potential buyers and journalists to a Dutchman who wants to turn it into the "Sweet Home Obama Bar."
• Oct. 28: A Syrian man, posts a newspaper outside his shop covering news of the recent US raid at the Syrian-Iraqi border, in Damascus, Syria. The deadly U.S. raid into Syria may complicate efforts to win approval for a new U.S.-Iraqi security deal. Syrian officials say U.S. troops and helicopters launched the raid Sunday inside Syrian territory close to the Iraqi border, killing eight people.
