Thousand-year-old corpse unwrapped in Peru

  • This male mummy, with metal plates placed over his eyes, was found in the ancient Peruvian town of Rontoy in June 2008.
  • The mummy was buried with metal plates over his eyes and one in his mouth, shown here.
  • A black tattoo follows the angle of the mummy's knee joint. Tattoos are usually found on elite people, said Kit Nelson, who is currently unraveling the mummy with her colleagues.
  • Upon examining the mummy's right arm and hand, researchers found the mummy clutched an empty woolen bag and two loops of yarn.
  • A pre-Columbian mummy was found in Peru's ancient city of Rontoy, in the Huaura River Valley.
