Iran and the Bomb — "Site Photos"

Sunday, 10pm / 1am ET

  • Arak heavy water production facility in Iran before the building of a heavy water reactor began. Photo shows heavy water production plant to the right and cleared space to the left where land has been cleared in preparation for building of the reactor.
  • Arak after the building of the heavy water reactor began. The heavy water reactor, in the top left of the photo, is under construction and looks like a strip mine. Heavy water is used to moderate the nuclear chain reaction in one type of nuclear reactor that could be used either for civilian power production or to produce bomb materials.
  • This photo shows a gas centrifuge site under construction at Natanz. The area of interest is in the center, showing two large, square buildings half covered with concrete.
  • Photo shows buildings at Natanz, which will house over 50,000 gas centrifuges, covered up and buried underground. The IAEA has characterized the centrifuges at this site as sophisticated and the culmination of a large, expensive effort.
  • Here are the previous two photos side-by-side; the buried buildings are no longer visible. This Iranian facility could be used for the production of low enriched uranium for civil purposes or highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons.
  • This site in Lavizan-Shian, in northeastern Tehran, is a military site show here in a picture from August 2003.
  • The same site in Lavizan-Shian in March 2004. As you can see in the center of the photo, a large number of buildings have been removed from the area.
  • Lavizan-Shian in May 2004, completely bulldozed, and the ground scraped. The IAEA requested to inspect the site. Before they were able to gain access, Iran bulldozed and removed the dirt.
  • Esfahan is an established uranium conversion facility in Iran. This picture was taken in October of 2001. Take a look at the hills in the upper left of the photograph. There appears to be no activity.
  • This is the same site at Esfahan in January 2005. Look at the same hills in the upper left. You’ll notice there seems to be some new buildings and what appear to be deep underground tunnel preparations. Iran declared the tunneling for storage, but the work is much larger than what would normally be needed for such a facility.
