  • March 27: A helicopter flies past a column of smoke coming out of the heavily fortified Green Zone that houses the U.S. Embassy and the Iraqi government offices in Baghdad, Iraq. Shiite militants continued to hammer the U.S-protected Green Zone with rockets and mortars for a fifth day this week.
  • March 27: A small piece of jawbone is exhibited at a news conference in Burgos, Spain. The bone, unearthed in a cave in Spain, is the oldest known fossil of a human ancestor in Europe and suggests people lived on the continent much earlier than previously believed, scientists said. The researchers said the fossil found last year at Atapuerca in northern Spain, along with stone tools and animal bones, is up to 1.3 million years old.
  • March 27: A pizza with a mozzarella cheese topping is cooked in a traditional wood fire oven in downtown Naples, southern Italy. EU officials threatened Rome Thursday with a possible Europe-wide ban on mozzarella from Italy's Campania region unless they get more details about production of the cheese, samples of which were found to contain higher-than-permitted levels of dioxins.
  • March 27: A visitor tests the electric scooter Shoprider of the Reva energy team in the EVER Monaco 2008, a trade show dedicated to ecological vehicles and renewable energies. The Shoprider provides a weatherproof environment without being exposed to the elements and can be used legally in France on the pavement as well as on the road.
  • March 27: The Royal Air Force display team the Red Arrows perform the first 2008 display practice in the skies over their home base of RAF Scampton in eastern England. Over the past few months the Red Arrows have been flying six sorties per day, working hard to get ready for the busy 2008 summer display season. They will perform over 75 displays in the United Kingdom, Europe and North America between May and October.
  • March 27: In this photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, a collapsed 197-foot section of Jintang Bridge falls onto a cargo ship after an accident near the eastern seaport of Ningbo, in east China's Zhejiang Province. Four crew members remain missing, according to China's maritime search and rescue authority.
  • March 27: Firefighters work at a home for alcoholics in Espoo, Finland, where a fire killed at least five people and injured five others. The fire, which began around 4 a.m., destroyed the old, two-story wooden house in Espoo, near Helsinki. Firefighters said they feared more victims might be buried in the rubble.
  • March 26: Vandana, a baby girl who fell into a 45-foot well, is rescued in Agra, India. Vandana was rescued after spending 27 hours in the pit, officials said.
  • March 27: A visitor to the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2008 takes a close look at 418 different figures of popular cartoon character 'Kinniku man, or Muscle Man' on display in Tokyo. The world's largest anime fair expects to have more than 100,000 visitors from around the world.
