God and the government slimdown

Mr. President and members of Congress, I respect you, care about you, and I pray for you.

The Bible instructs all of us to pray for our leaders. I sincerely pray that you are able to live as successful and wise public servants.  “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. “ – Micah 6:8

The prophet Micah was urging Israel’s leaders to be mindful of their high calling of service. He made the urgent plea to address the fact that leaders were governing with injustice, unkindness and pride.

Certainly, the failure to reach an agreement to avert a partial government shutdown is not indicative of humble and servant leadership.

It is not reflective of the glorious light that shines like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Instead, this is a dark hour that reflects the spirit of division, partisanship over principle, ideology over inspired insight, and pride over humility.

What a mess! How pathetic! The world’s only superpower is in a self-inflicted government slimdown.

This action has caused many Americans to wonder what will it take to see our Republic to truly be a government for the people and by the people.

Some Americans who are frustrated angrily say the president and congress have become about as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

Still, other Americans who support the government slimdown claim it took courage to bring the country to a shutdown in order to seek a smackdown of ObamaCare.

But let me remind all of us what our 16th President Abraham Lincoln said about choosing sides; “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.”

Our leadership is dysfunctional and broken. We are in need of healing. We are in need of CPR (Congress Performing Responsibly) and a president who will part the waters of division by bringing all sides together to a table of reconciliation.

Businessman and Evangelist Lance Wallnau claims the Bible identifies seven areas that all of us must learn to manage more effectively in order to change the toxic culture of politics in Washington. Those areas are Family, Religion, Education, Government, Media, Arts and Business.

Wallnau says people of faith in God must adopt a 7-Mountain strategy in order to produce a more effective government.

Wallnau is concerned the Church is preaching the Gospel well but still leaving people powerless because we fail to teach them how to exercise their gifts and talents in these areas of influence.

Wallnau is concerned that our troubled economy and absence of leadership is a sign that our democracy is being battered by selfishness and corruption.

He believes we must infuse a biblical foundation in every area of our lives in order to achieve a more perfect union.

Mahatma Gandhi once challenged politicians with an impassioned plea for them to understand that we are confronted by seven deadly sins:

Wealth without work
Pleasure without conscience
Science without humanity
Knowledge without character
Politics without principle
Commerce without morality
Worship without sacrifice.”

It’s time for a change. Now is the time for all of us to humble ourselves, turn from our selfish ways, seek God’s direction and pray that our nation will be transformed from Red States and Blue States into a United States.
