President Obama met with his war council today to discuss strategyin Afghanistanon what marks the eighth anniversary of the US invasion. While top U.S. commander, General Stanley McChrystal is seeking additional troops there are many Democrats and some of the President's war advisers that do not agree--President Obama inherited the war when he took office and in eight years nearly 800 Americans have lost their lives. Republicans on the Hill are supporting Gen. The House Republicans tried to pass a resolution that would oust Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee after alleged ethics violations including failure to pay taxes and disclose income on multiple properties. House Democrats struck down the measure, but Republicans asked for a second recorded vote-- the reading of the resolution was interrupted multiple times and challenged by the Democrats before being put to a vote. Rangel has served in the House for almost 40 years and hasreportedly failed to report as much as $1.3 million in
income from 2002-2006....critics are saying he should resign amid the allegations and investigations.
The Supreme Courtbegan hearing arguments ina legal dispute involving a cross erected 75 years ago in in a remote part of the California desert. The cross was put up by the VFW to honor fallen soldiers from WWI. In recent years the cross was covered up after a federal court ruling saying it was a violation of the First Amendment and a formerNational Park Service employee, Frank Buono, sued to have thecross removed when a request was denied to have a Buddhist memorial built nearby....the case comes on the third day of high courts the new session and the first for the newly appointed Justice, Sonia Sotomayor--Shannon Bream is at
