    • Health care, Credit Cards and Pakistan....

      President Obama was joined today by health care groups pledging to cut the cost of health care for Americans, saying that $2 trillion can be saved over health_care_obama_graphicthe next 10 years by cutting annual costs. President Obama said the commitment to money saving efforts that insurers, hospitals and doctors have made will help him to achieve the health care reform he is pushing for on Capitol Hill--Major Garrett reports.

      Jim Angle is covering the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act, which limits the ability of credit card companies to increase interest rates, requires 45 days notice of a pending interest rate increase, and requires more disclosure of rates, fees and penalties to consumers. The bank stress tests released last Thursday suggested the nation's largest banks wouldhave approximately $82.4 billion in credit card loss by the end of 2010--President Obama is urging Congress to approve the new rules and hopes to sign the legislation by Memorial Day.

      A U.S. soldier opened fire at a military base outside of Baghdad International Airport today killing at least 5 soldiers and wounding 3 others.The shooter is alive and is in custody although originally it was reported that the Army soldier shot the others and then proceeded to turn the gun on himself-- Steve Centanni has more on this story.

      General David Petraeus said Sunday on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, that Al Qaeda is no longer operating in Afghanistan, with its senior petraeus_120908leadership having moved to the western region of Pakistan. Petraeus said the Taliban's effort to extend their territory beyond the northern Swat valley seems to have "galvanized all of Pakistan" against the group. "This is not a U.S. fight that Pakistan is carrying out at this point...This is a Pakistani fight, a Pakistani battle, with elements that as we've mentioned threatenthe very existence of the Pakistani state."       Over the weekend at the annual Kentucky GOP Lincoln Dinner Sen. Minority LeaderJim Bunning (R-KY) refuted reports that he intends to retire from the U.S. Senate. "I am running for a third term to the United States Senate. I hope and pray I have your support in the coming months," Bunning said. In the past few months Bunning has spoken out against his fellow party leaders, inclding Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). Bunning even threatened to sue the NRSC if they did not support his bid for re-election and then later threatened not to run--Steve Brown is following this story.
