Grapevine: Lone Star Nation?

And now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine...

Lone Star Nation?

More than 80,000 people have now signed a petition for Texas to peacefully leave the United States and create a new government.

Similar secessionist petitions are currently gathering signatures in dozens of other states, many quoting the Declaration of Independence.

The White House claims they respond to all petitions that gather over 25,000 signatures a threshold that Florida, Louisiana and Texas have already crossed.

A spokesperson for Texas Gov. Rick Perry responded -- quote -- "Governor Perry believes in the greatness of our union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government."

Election Issue

During the election President Obama and Governor Romney battled over many things, including food stamps.

On November 9th -- three days after the election -- Ohio's Department of Job and Family Services announced that food stamp benefits will drop by about $50 a month for 870,000 of the state's poorest citizens, starting January 1st.

That adds up to more than half a billion dollars out of grocery budgets.

The state appeal to the federal government was denied which prompted a conservative blogger to quip -- quote -- "They told me if I voted for Mitt Romney food stamp benefits would be cut, and they were right."

Hot and Bothered

Victoria's Secret's annual fashion show got attention for the clothing but probably not in the way they'd hoped.

This Native American inspired outfit with a floor length head-dress caused outrage.
A Navajo Nation Spokesman said -- quote -- "Any mockery, whether it's Halloween, Victoria's Secret -- they are spitting on us. They are spitting on our culture."

Victoria's Secret has apologized and they edited out that segment from their broadcast.
