Monday October 14, 2013 Happening Now - Shutdown Day 14 and Now 3 Days to Debt Ceiling Breach

Day 14 of the government shutdown..

No deal.

And now the government getting close to running out of money.

Also no deal on the debt ceiling.

And the potential of defaulting on the nation's bills.

Just another manic Monday.

The Senate meets at 2pm today. The House is in session as well, but no votes until 6:30. So much for a sense of urgency.

Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke yesterday, but failed to come to an agreement. The Washington Post today reports on a bitter fight between the two men. Uh oh.

Meantime, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew warns the U.S. will run out of money to pay the bills by Thursday. That could lead to some tough choices. For example should the U.S. pay the interest on our debt? Or should we send out social security checks? How about reimbursing hospitals for Medicare and Medicaid? Or paying our troops? Yikes.

Apparently, many eyes will be on the financial markets. The Dow finished up Thursday and Friday of last week on the hopes of a deal. Now that a deal's likelihood is in doubt once again, markets may take a hit. We'll see.

Big meeting this week in Geneva. Negotiators from Iran and five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council arrive in Switzerland today. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is speaking to the Israeli parliament today, and he'll likely bring up the Iran talks. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Joint Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Syria as well.

Disturbing analysis by the L.A. Times finds more than 1000 buildings in the Los Angeles area are in danger of collapse in a large earthquake (which is overdue in several spots in CA!)
