• #NYFW As New York Fashion Week Has An Existential Crisis, Shows Proliferate & The Money Keeps Rolling In

New York Fashion Week has come and gone once again. Debate is raging in the industry about the value of the semi-annual event, and many designers and fashionistas are complaining bitterly about Lincoln Center (along with Upper West Side neighbors), and the sheer number of events. There are even rumors the shows could be moved to the new Hudson Yard Development someday. Despite the agita about the future of the shows, it's still big business.

In fact, New York City estimates the events are worth about a half a *billion* dollars in direct visitor spending every year to the economy.

And more and more small houses, and international designers are showing in New York.

Happening Now had the opportunity to attend several fashion shows at New York Fashion Week this year. including the duo Mark & Estel's Spring 2014 collection (all made in the USA).

Mark & Estel (Mark Tango and Estel Day) are an L.A.-based pairing, and presented a raucous show heavy on loud music, rock & roll clothes, and an after-hours vibe. There was lots of black and white, sheer, and even a peek-a-boo belly look. It was their 13th collection and the first time at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

We also got to see the student designs from The Art Institue of New York City, a talented group of designers from Argentina, and two up-and-coming Chinese designers in the Fashion Shenzhen show. Samsung let us use the new Samsung Galaxy S 4 (with a great camera) to take pictures of the shows and the backstage action at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Samsung was a main sponsor, also unveiling their new Galaxy Gear smart watch at Lincoln Center.
