This month we traveled to Wyoming for an interview with former Vice President Dick Cheney and an exclusive look into his life now that he is out of office. One of the former VP's favorite hobbies is fly fishing, so he invited us for a fishing trip down the Snake River. But, this was no ordinary fishing trip, however. We had the honor of tagging along with Rivers of Recovery; an amazing group that provides physically and psychologically injured combat veterans rehabilitation during a four-day camping and fly fishing trip.

During the trip vets partake in a science-based rehab program that focuses on confidence-building, stress reduction and the self-management of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While you might not think of a fishing trip as therapy, the results are dramatic. Medical testing done before and after the trips show that 6 months to a year later, Post Traumatic Stress symptoms, depression and anxiety have all decreased.

And the need is great. As their website explains, "It is estimated that 400,000 to 600,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from psychological injuries. Another 320,000 returnees suffer from a probable Traumatic Brain Injury."

The group was founded by Dan Cook, a former Wall Street trader who decided he wanted to give back and personally funded the first 2 years' programs. Dan hooked us up with our two guides-- both combat vets who had been through the program originally as participants and fell in love with it so much they have made it their career.

Justin Clenard began with Rivers of Recovery in 2008 as a participant. Justin served two combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan in the United States Marine Corps. In Afghanistan he stepped on a pressure-plate IED and lost both of his legs. But, he didn't let that slow him down. 8 weeks after his injury he was on the river with Rivers Of Recovery. He soon began to volunteer for the organization and in 2011 Justin joined up as a guide.

Edgar Duffey was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and part of the initial invasion force when the Iraq war began. He was blown off of his vehicle by an artillery round and suffered major damage to his shoulders. Duffey came face to face with PTSD and due to his injuries was put on a laundry list of medications. After his Rivers Of Recovery trip, he decided to "self-medicate" by fly fishing and was hooked on his new hobby. He is now an experienced guide, and is medication free-- something he says is due to his Rivers Of Recovery trip.

These guys are truly great Americans and heroes for what they do to help their fellow Soldiers, Airmen and Marines re-enter society.

All of this is free to the participants and is made possible by donations. So take some time to visit riversofrecovery.org and help them out
