Active HeroesIraq veteran Troy Yocum launches Active Heroes with plans to continue fundraising for military families through the new nonprofit.

The volunteer-led nonprofit charity aims to strengthen military families and assist veterans and active duty members of the military by providing financial assistance and job placement.

Active Heroes achieves their mission through providing a wide variety of help that includes aid in finances, such as car payments, mortgages and house bills. They help provide special assistance to military children and travel assistance to military families.

The program also helps with job referral services for unemployed veterans and appropriate attire for job interviews.

There are various ways to get involved and honor the wounded warriors in your town. The charity encourages people to take part in fundraising efforts by creating or participating in charity hikes and walk-a-thons across the country.

Yocum implemented his Hikes for Heroes campaign in 2011, where he hiked more than 7,800 miles across the United States. He raised more than $1 million for military families in need and won the 2011 Volunteer of the Year in the 4th Annual Classy Awards.

Yocum and his wife Mareike hope to see the same success from their new endeavor.

"Mareike and I are so ready for this," said Yocum in a statement to the press. "After raising money for other charities for the past two years, now it's time to channel our experience into a venture that is solely focused on raising money for military families in need."

Meanwhile, the Active Heroes team will be visiting various national parks and towns, spreading word about the organizations efforts and recruiting others to join in on the fundraising.
