Since the end of the G20 Summit and President Obama's whirlwind trip around Europe and the Middle East, not much has been said about what, if anything, wasactually accomplished there. The agreementfrom the G20 Summit was that the countries agreed to put more money in trade finance over the next few years and todiscourage protectionism.
However, theU.N. General Assembly President Miguel D'Escoto Brockman has made his opinion loud and clear. In recent remarks, he has called the "G20pretty much a failure any way you slice it"because it did not allocate 2 or 3 TRILLION dollars to developing countries. He further goes on to blame the global economic crisis solely on the war in Iraq, apparently ignoring the credit default swapproblems, housing market fluctuations and other economic and market factors that have ZERO to do with the Iraq War.
Meanwhile, the U.N. General Assembly president also plans to travel to Venezuela to meet with Chavez, and to Cuba to meet with Castro and the socialist Bolivian President Morales. While in Cuba, Brockman plans on attending the G77 Summit, which consists of nations thatfrequently speak out against Western policy (this includes China).
What do you think of this G77 Summit? I find it a bit suspicious that the president of the U.N. General Assembly is going to communist, socialist countries with HORRENDOUS human rights records and then decrying Western and U.S. policy while there. What does this say about the U.N. and its priorities? Let us know below!
