Dating Feng Shui: What to Wear to Get a Second Date
Sure, feng shui can do wonders for your home or office. But it also can boost your love life. READ: 3 Ways to Bounce Back from Rejection When it comes to decorating, feng shui practitioners bring positive energy into their surroundings partially through color. Same concept for love: Valentine’s Day decorations are pink and red, as both colors remind us of love. As for Halloween, orange and black are often associated with darkness and fright. Apply the same philosophy on color to dating. A recent poll shows that the men find women in red the most appealing; yellow and brown, not so much.  Women, on the other hand, find men to be most attractive in gray, black, or blue while pink and yellow were turn offs. Superficial as it sounds, a U.K. poll asked men and women currently in relationships whether they remembered what their honey was wearing when they first met. A whopping 92 percent did. How important are first impressions? "Human beings make a decision on whether they like the other person in about seven seconds," says Mark Bradford, founder and developer of onlyaglance.com, a dating website. As a stylist, I can assure you that pulling off this look to boost your confidence during a nerve-racking first date is easier than you think. The key is to go for subtle rather than clubbing a potential partner over the head with it. Opt for hints of red by pairing a black dress with red shoes, a red top with a black pencil skirt, or a black dress with red lips. Burlesque star Dita Von Teese says "Heels and red lipstick will put the fear of God into people” and she wasn't kidding.  WATCH: Dita Von Teese on How to Buy Lingerie “The sympathetic response in arousal, sexual or otherwise, results in a flushed face, especially noticeable in red-tinged cheeks,” says Beverly B. Palmer, professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. “Women might wear blusher to simulate sexual arousal and the reflection onto the face of a bright red dress might also simulate arousal.” “Red is an arousing, exciting color,” Palmer says. “Thus, a red dress may communicate arousal and excitement.” Dana Claudat, a Los Angeles-based art historian and feng shui consultant, agrees that this fiery color can do wonders not just for your wardrobe, but also in the romance department. “Red is a color that magnetizes the eye,” explains Claudat. “It is the reason it’s so commonly used by mega brands in logos. You will catch shades of red and fixate on them more than any color. In some schools of energy healing, red corresponds to the energy center at the base of your spine known sometimes at the root chakra. This is the area that is believed to dictate one’s money, as well as sex drive.” “Red is a great color to wear if you are looking to boost your passionate confidence,” she says. “Red lips are the ultimate iconic symbol of attraction as they are literally hard to take your eyes off of, and mouths are extremely alluring for both sexes. Red can definitely make you more memorable.” As for men, I encourage you to dress just as sharp to have eyes on you. Think of dating like it’s a fun job interview. Sure, you can rely on your skills and expertise, but you always have to look as sharp as possible. The sharper you look, the better your chances of getting a job, or in this case…a second date. READ: Women Like a Man in a White T, Scientists Say “Dark blue, black, and gray are seen as solid, masculine colors, so I feel women will be responding to that, perhaps in the sense that those colors project steadfastness, power, and perhaps a hint of safety,” says Andrew Luecke, menswear editor at Stylesight.com. “All men should know that a perfectly tailored sports coat in a dark solid color is their secret weapon,” he says. “It can go nearly anywhere, and will make a man look slim, broad-shouldered, and sophisticated. Paired with a slim trouser or dark denim and a decent shoe, this look is universally appealing. For men who fancy themselves rebels, a fitted black leather jacket can be a substitute for most situations.” My personal advice for male clients prepping for a first date? Since women prefer dark shades, opt for a nice knit gray sweater over nicely fitted Levi’s jeans, a great option for those who aren’t big on the more formal suit and tie look. You also want to make sure your shoe game is on point as well. I don’t know one man who has gotten a second date wearing a pair of dingy Converse that had holes in them! When it comes to dressing for a first date, it isn’t about putting more emphasis on the way one looks. Rather, this is about the beauty of self-expression and being able to present yourself as a desirable candidate without words. Think about this way: are you more likely to date a man who dresses like he hasn’t showered in two weeks or a man in a suit, tie, and a pocket square? Would you be more likely to date a woman who hasn’t brushed her hair and is wearing an oversized frock that looks like a potato sack or a woman who is in a sleek dress and black patent leather shoes?
