Move Over Plum: Three New Fall Lip Trends

Plum lips are usually all the rage for fall.  But this season, it seems beauty gurus are deviating from the norm. Instead, they're painting more pouts with nudes, matte reds, and shockingly darker hues. READ: Best Lip Products to Get Fall's Hottest Looks Professional makeup artist, Lauren Cosenza tells us which lip colors are rocking the runways, and how to achieve three trending looks for fall. Watch the video above to see how to get them.

  • Pale Pout
Cosenza says pale pouts with a grunge undertone are very on trend for fall. To achieve this look, she suggests using colors that have a little chalkiness to them. "If your skin is warm-toned, choose a clay color, and if you're cool-toned go for ashy colors." Step 1: Lightly apply a nude lipliner around the edges of your lips, and then smudge the lines so that there's no obvious lip line.Try: Bodyography, Lipliner in "Barely There"  Step 2: Use your finger to pat a clay or ashy shade of lipstick onto your lips. Press on the color so that it looks cushiony and soft.Try: Hourglass, Femme Rouge in "Fable"

  • Retro Matte
Just because matte lips are in style, doesn't mean you have to splurge on new lipstick. Cosenza says, "You can easily mattify any red lipstick you own by patting transluscent powder over it." When it comes to choosing your perfect red shade, Cosenza says go for a red with blue undertones if you have cool skin, and go for a red that has yellow undertones if you have warm skin.   Step 1: Outline and fill in your lips with lipliner. This layer will also add to longevity of your lipstick.Try: NARS, lipliner in "Jungle Red"  Step 2: Apply a red lipstick (it doesn't have to be matte). Cosenza suggests using a brush to help accentuate the lines of your lips, especially the "cupid's bow".Try: MAC, Pro Longwear Lipstick in "Prolong"  Step 3: To mattify the look, dust a translucent powder over your lips. This step will also set the color, ensuring it lasts all day or all night.Try: Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder

  • Vamp Meets Punk
Dark, vampy lips make a bold statement. If you love this daring look, Cosenza shows us how to achieve it with a punk twist. She also says can also experiment with lighter colors to get a more wearable daytime look. Step 1: Apply a berry-colored liner into the center of the lips. Using a brush or your finger, diffuse the color outward.Try: MAC lipliner in "Beet"  Step 2: Also using a berry-colored lipstick, apply to the center of the lips, brushing outward.Try: Lancome, Rouge in Love Lipstick in "Berry in Love"  Step 3: Complete the look with a tick clear gloss to acheive that punk, vinyl look.Try: MAC, Clear Lip Glass  Bonus Step: If you're daring enough, and want to take this look to the next level, Cosenza says you can apply a deeper shade of red or plum (even black!) to the center of your lips.
