  • Forget About Melting Makeup
“Instead of the usual heavy-duty makeup, adding a lighter version to your routine will keep you looking fresher and, consequently, younger,” says beauty expert Hilary Kennedy. For those trying out lip stains for the first time, she recommends Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, which can be found in major drug stores. It looks like a jumbo crayon, except it goes on smoothly and comes in vibrant colors, like hot pink and tangerine.

“Anyone can wear a lip stain,” says Shana King, senior director of beauty and education for Anisa International. “They are almost like chameleons. They adapt to your natural lip color. They’re a great way to add subtle sex appeal without all the extra steps. They just let our lips remain kissable.” King recommends a berry or soft pink sue, which is flattering on all skin tones. Tart LipSurgence Lip Tint offers just that as a non-drying rich balm.

  • Moisturize for Kissable Lips
If your lipstick tends to feather easily, find a stain that will keep them moisturized. “Most tints have hydrating ingredients, such as shea butter, jojoba oil and coconut oil,” says celebrity makeup artist Lucy Baldock and founder of Lucy B’s Apothecary. “Check the ingredients when selecting the right shade for you.” For an added bonus, look for ones featuring SPF. For this season, Baldock likes Stila Cherry Crush Lip Stain, which highlights vitamins A, C and E.

  • Add a Touch of Glamour
Red lips never go out of style, but for a more weightless variation, try a lip stain in a rich coral hue, like Zoe Saldana. “Just one application can last six-to-eight hours and frees women from constantly running to the mirror,” says celebrity makeup artist Amanda Shackleton. For a cherry red pout, try Josie Maran’s Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stain in “Flamenco.”

  • Prep First
“Glosses and lipsticks are usually made from wax and oil bases, but stains have a water or gel base to them,” says Kennedy. To prep lips and prevent unwanted flaking, Kennedy advises exfoliating your pout with baking soda and a toothbrush. As an alternative, try Sugar Lip Polish by Fresh to create a soft, smooth palette.

  • Revamp a Classic
One of the best things about lip stains? They easily revamp another popular beauty look. When it comes to seductive smoky eyes, Kennedy suggests giving those heavy lipsticks a break and instead, opting for a lip stain in the hue of your choice. For summer, try the poppy-pink tinted Benefit Poisetint, which also doubles as a cheek stain for a touch of blush.

  • Make Your Own
“Get equal parts of honey, cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter and vitamin e oil,” King says. “Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder for flavor and to add color. Then, mix all of the ingredients together. Add a bit more shea butter if it’s too runny. This can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge for a couple of weeks.” As an alternative, score Clinique Almost Lipstick in “Black Honey.”
