From creamy lattes to savory soups, pumpkin is arguably the official flavor of fall — but did you know this orange squash can also give you amazing hair?
Kyle White, lead colorist at New York City-based Oscar Blandi Salon, loves using this seasonal food as a luxurious conditioner to gives clients smooth, touchable tresses that beat the drying winds of autumn.
“Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, and when used directly (onto the scalp), you get the natural goodness straight from the source,” explains White. “Similar to bananas and avocado, pumpkin is a rich source of potassium — a nutrient that is especially useful in promoting the regrowth of hair.”
“Pumpkin is also especially good for moisturizing dry, damaged hair,” he adds.
While you may be tempted to enjoy a slice of pie instead, skip on the sweets (just for now) and indulge your locks instead by using pumpkin on your mane.
White shares his rich pumpkin conditioner recipe below, which you could easily prepare and apply at home with ease:
Pumpkin Hair Conditioner Recipe
- 2 cups pumpkin (chopped and cooked)
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon plain yogurt
In a food processor or blender, puree the pumpkin and yogurt. Next, add the coconut oil and honey, ensuring that the mixture is smooth. Apply the mixture to damp hair. Cover hair with a plastic cap and let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash out thoroughly using your everyday shampoo and conditioner. Style as usual.
