Career Tip Tuesday: Don't Let Your Love of Social Media Ruin the Interview

You already know how important social media is to your job search, but don't forget, too much of a good thing can be bad.

Not all employers are ready to embrace their potential social media-savvy employees.

Focusing on your Twitter expertise and Facebook reach may turn recruiters off and blow your chances in an interview, sending your resume straight to the shredder.

If your interviewer doesn't believe social media knowledge is a valuable asset and you place too much emphasis on how you excel in this area it can make your potential employer believe you will spend most of your day tweeting away instead of managing the tasks at hand. If you want to properly highlight your social media skills, follow some of the tips below.

1. Keep up your professional appearance

This goes for all social networks where you have a presence. Use a consistent and professional photo for your profile picture across all networks.  Make sure you delete any unprofessional wall comments that friends may have left.

2. Tell them how you will use social media to benefit the company

Find a way to show your potential employer how using social media fits in the job description.  It could be used for research, finding more customers, or making more money for the company. Have you grown a company’s social media site? Use quantitative data that shows your past successes. Don’t expect to use social media at work to keep up with your social life.

3. Apply for jobs that require social media knowledge

Research the positions before you apply for them. Usually the job description will mention social media in the responsibilities section. If it doesn’t include social media, then just make a quick reference of it and move on.

With any interview that you have, be sure to research the company before going to talk with a recruiter. You will not only be prepared to answer questions, but you will be able to ask the right questions to find out if this job is right for you as well.
