An 11 year old girl was gang raped. To most this is a statement that incites outrage, disgust, and perhaps even fear. It forces us to ask ourselves, “How could this have happened?”
Sadly, this is a different question than the ones being asked in her small community of Cleveland, Texas, where questions about her responsibility in the crime committed against her are now reaching the national media. Blaming the victim—a child—shows the distance we still have go where women’s rights are concerned. The feminist movement isn’t over.
But the label feminist—once synonymous with strong, independent women—has gotten a bad rap in recent years. Many confuse feminism with the hatred of man, but the author of Feminist is a bad word explained that men benefit when we are all equal.
One reader said, “Look at my picture to see what a feminist looks like. A feminist is person who stands up for equality of basic human rights, education, health, etc. It has everything to do with respecting ourselves and each other as human beings and being able to have and exercise my rights and freedoms with NO limitations.”
We now have more freedom than ever. The results of the 2010 latest census proved once again that the Latino population in the U.S. continues to rise and our buying power gives us a stronger voice than ever. We can now focus on the issues on the issues such as health, that are important to us not just as Latinos but as Latinos AND Latinas.
