Sports car of the near future?

Who says racing isn't relevant to road cars? The Nissan BladeGlider is a radical new sports car concept that could be gliding down a country road near you soon.

Inspired by the DeltaWing racing car that Nissan fielded in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012 and the ZEOD RC hybrid it will campaign in the race next year, the lightweight BladeGlider features a unique deltoid shape with two narrow tires tucked into the nose for low aerodynamic drag giving way to a wider rear end draped in downforce-producing carbon fiber bodywork.

The driver sits in the middle of the vehicle with two passenger seats situated on either side and slightly behind. The aircraft-inspired steering wheel and control layout play off of its delta wing shape.

Doors that open like wings are a show car and prototype racer must-have, while battery-powered in-wheel motors at the rear are a next-generation development of Nissan's electric drive technology.

While the open top is intended to enhance exhilaration on the road, a coupe version hints at a maximum performance model better suited for the track. The BladeGlider will make its debut as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show this month, but Nissan says it is an "exploratory prototype of an upcoming production vehicle" and fully intends to put something like it in showrooms in the near future.
