There’s a new kind of sweet beer sweeping the nation: boozy root beer.
Think A&W with alcohol.
Not Your Father’s Root Beer, from Small Town Brewery in Wauconda, Ill., is new on the retail scene and has already earned a rating of 94 out of 100 on Beer Advocate, an online beer community that teaches about and promotes craft brewing.
According to Bloomberg, the brewery got an injection of money from a group of investors that included the chief executive officer of Pabst Brewery that led to a distribution deal.
Yet, DIY beer brewers had already been playing with a boozy root beer, featuring a familiar blends of sassafras bark, vanilla, anise, wintergreen, and spices. These brews aren't for the kiddies. They have enough alcohol to give you a good buzz, and Not Your Father’s Root Beer has an ABV of 5.9 percent, which is comparable to regular beers.
Beer advocates say the success behind the drink is the familiar taste.
"I would venture to say everyone I know who drinks alcohol has had [hard root beer] by this point," Matt Simpson, an Atlanta-based consultant who does business as the Beer Sommelier, told Bloomberg. "As far as the popularity goes, it’s pretty simple: It tastes pretty good. It tastes like root beer, only with alcohol that you can’t really taste anyway."
