After his hockey career came to an inauspicious end due to a knee injury, Mattias hlund is leaving Tampa behind -- as well as his lavish five-bedroom home, which recently sold for a hair over $3.3 million.
After 11 solid seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, the high-scoring NHL defenseman signed a seven-year, $26.25 million contract in 2009 with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Waylaid shortly thereafter with a knee injury, hlund never got the opportunity to strike, playing two ineffective seasons in Tampa Bay. After surgery in February 2012, he told news outlets he wasn't sure if he could continue playing.
It looks like he's made his decision and closing the chapter on Florida. His stunning 6,344-square-foot waterfront home on Davis Islands sold last weekend after three months on the market.
According to the listing agent, a buyer scored a sweet deal. "It lends itself well to Florida living inside and out," says Mary Pond of Smith & Associates Real Estate. Outside you'll find a private dock -- an hlund addition -- as well as a small putting green, pool, and spa.
"It's a really nice and comfortable flowing home," Pond says.
The home's neutral interiors feel almost ethereal, with a marble-floored foyer and an open floor plan divided by white columns. Beneath whitewashed box-beam ceilings are the spacious living room and "well-appointed" kitchen, says Pond. In that kitchen, you'll find an enormous marble-topped center island, double ovens, and a breakfast bar.
Or the new owner might prefer to cook outside in the open-air kitchen, with a built-in grill and refrigerator. The kitchen has steps that lead directly to the pool, and a nearby sitting area -- one of many relaxation points in the entertaining-friendly outdoor space.
We'll bet the new owner will want to spend all day in the home's astonishingly large master suite, with a balcony overlooking the water and plenty of room for a bed, sitting area, and perhaps a gymnastics studio. The adjoining (and equally spacious) bathroom has his-and-her closets and granite cabinetry.
A first-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 1994, hlund scored 93 goals during his 13-year career and played for the Swedish national hockey team in four Winter Olympics.
