Ford has a very cool new car. But you can’t drive it.
That is, unless your name is Tanner Foust, Brian Deegan or Ken Block.
The Fiesta ST rallycross car was designed and built in partnership with Swedish racing outfit OlsbergsMSE and will be fielded for the aforementioned trio in the 2013 Global Rallycross Championship, which includes four races held in conjunction with the ESPN X Games.
The head-to-head events take place over a short, closed course comprised of a mix of dirt and tarmac sections along with a jump or two.
The subcompact has been fully reengineered from the production Fiesta, with carbon fiber body parts, safety equipment, an all-wheel-drive system and a 600 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can propel it from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds.
“They’re hyperactive! This is a ridiculously scary thing to drive,” Foust says, “because it changes direction so fast, and that’s what makes it fun for a racer.”
Never fear, racing fans will be able to pick up a hot new street-legal Fiesta ST later this year with a six-speed manual transmission, front-wheel drive and 197 hp 1.6-liter turbo stuffed under its little hood.
