I love October because everything is pink in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Tons of people and organizations get involved and cover everything pink. My son’s football team wears pink socks, gloves, wristbands, among other things.
Even the wine world goes pink.
Sutter Home was one of the first wine companies to make a commitment to breast cancer awareness. And I recently spoke with Wendy Nyberg, senior marketing director for Trinchero Family Estates, which owns Sutter Home.
She explained that The Sutter Home for Hope program was launched in 2001, after one of the founders, Vera Trinchero Torres, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"For every top quality seal from any Sutter Home bottle of wine that Sutter Home receives from consumers, we will donate $1 towards breast cancer research, treatment and education, up to $100,000 to our beneficiary charity - the City of Hope," says Nyberg. The program runs through December 31, 2012, so you've got time.
Sutter Home has raised over $800,000 towards research and education, over the past 11 years and the goal is to hit $1 million this time.
Sutter Home is best known for its White Zinfandel (which happens to be pink.) The Trinchero Family purchased Sutter Home in 1948 and today it is growing at a 13 percent faster pace than is the total wine category, according to Nielsen Retail.
It’s not just the white zinfandel that’s their big seller. Moscato was actually one of the first varietals produced by Sutter Home over 50 years ago, and this year they added new ones – Pink Moscato, Bubbly Moscato, and Bubbly Pink Moscato. And for the first time -- a Red Moscato. (I’m thinking Valentine’s Day already.)
So go drink something pink. Sure it’s for a good cause, but drinking pink inevitably makes me smile.
