Honda has released the first images of its all-new 2013 Accord sedan and Accord Coupe, which go on sale nationwide this fall. As the images reveal, Honda has only slightly updated the styling of the previous generation, adding a new sculpted look and a few premium touches.

Key design traits are sharper and more focused lines, with the overall design dominated by a bold grille, angular headlights and sweeping character lines running the length of the body.  Honda hasn’t revealed the interior just yet, though we suspect the premium look of the exterior will filter across into the cabin.

The automaker did note, however, that its designers have paid very close attention to the aerodynamics of the new shape, and have chosen to install flush windshield glass, flush-mounted windshield wipers and smooth underbody panels to reduce drag and thus enhance fuel economy.

Anyone who considers the current Accord just a tad too large will be pleased to know that the latest 2013 model is shorter than the one it replaces. The interior, however, is said to boast more space for both the cabin and trunk.

Honda hasn’t revealed any other details on its 2013 Accord, though the automaker has previously stated that it would launch a new cloud connectivity service with the car as well as its HondaLink smartphone feature. We also know that an Accord Hybrid is set to return and will be joined by a new plug-in hybrid model, mimicking Ford’s strategy with the 2013 Fusion by offering gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.

Like its competitors, the plug-in hybrid version of the 2013 Accord will offer an all-electric range, in this case up to 15 miles. The regular gas models should include a base 2.4-liter model and a range-topping 3.5-liter V-6.

The Accord is a crucial model for Honda; a leader in performance, safety, efficiency and value since its introduction in 1976, the Accord remains one of the top-selling cars in America though its age has seen that popularity drop in recent times. Key rivals include the aforementioned Ford Fusion, as well as the Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and recently revealed 2014 Mazda Mazda6.
