What to Eat to Lose Weight in 2012

Looking to go on a detox diet after the holidays and into the New Year? Registered Dietitian Marlene Carneiro recommends adopting a healthy lifestyle that focuses on well-balanced meals and physical activity. iMag sat down with Marlene for her healthy tips for eating right in the New Year.

The Healthy New Year Diet Plan: 

The average woman (height of 5’5” and 140 pounds) should consume approximately 1,700 calories/day.

- Breakfast: 300 cal
- Lunch: 500 cal
- Dinner: 500 cal
- Snacks: 200 cal or less

Low-calorie detox breakfasts:
- Egg white omelet with vegetables, whole wheat toast and fruit
- Oatmeal with nuts
- Protein shake

Low-calorie detox lunches:
- Mixed green salad with a source of protein (beans or grilled chicken breast)
- Broth-based soup with beans and vegetables
- Whole-grain sandwich with a lean protein, lettuce, tomatoes and onions

Low-calorie detox dinners:
- Salmon with steamed vegetables and brown rice
- Vegetarian chili with brown rice
- Pasta tossed with vegetables, chicken, or a ground lean meat

Quick Tip

Workout While Working! Sit on a stability ball while working at your desk. This will strengthen your core. Try and squeeze in shoulder presses and crunches. Also, try taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Even a few flights at a time will add up quick!
