Insider tips and the secluded secrets of this tropical paradise!

By the time winter comes to a close, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be itching for a warm-weather getaway. The only issue is that at this time of year, many hot climate destinations turn into spring break hotspots - overflowing with rowdy college students and crowded beaches. Now, if you're looking for something a little more private but still budget-friendly, Grand Cayman may be the perfect place for you. With some of the most gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean and only a short flight from the US, it's a great destination to go for some sun, sand, and adventure. However, the key to a great vacation there relies purely on the planning. Here are our tips and picks to having a great vacay in Grand Cayman.

Lodging We Love: Kaibo Kai Condominiums

Many tourists choose to stay on the resort side of the island which is towards the west. But if you're looking for a secluded vacation experience we recommend renting a condo towards the north end of the island like the Kaibo Kai Condominiums. They are extremely economical if you're traveling with a large group (around $ 1,750 a week for the off-season), and absolutely perfect for a family. Relax on your own private beach or watch the sunset from your ocean-side hot tub.

Travel Tip: When you arrive in Grand Cayman rent a car and immediately head to the grocery store. Stock up on food and necessities for the week before driving to your condo. The Kaibo Kai Condominiums each have a full kitchen and dining area, so you can cook the majority of your meals yourself and save a ton on dining out.

For beach sandwiches: Homemade Chicken Salad
For appetizers: Roasted Tomato Salsa and Guacamole
For dinner: Steak Fajitas

Best Beach: Rum Point

Also located on the north end of the island (and a short distance from your condo), this secluded retreat is nothing like Grand Cayman's crowded Seven Mile Beach. Enjoy snorkeling, jet skiing or try a beach side massage. Then head over to the Wreck Bar and Grill for a tropical beverage and tasty lunch. Our picks: an ice cold mudslide and delicious conch fritters.

Travel Tip: If you get to Rum Point early enough in the day you can reserve one of the comfy hammocks for yourself located on the retreat. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!

Best Restaurant: Portofino

For a taste of the local fare with an Italian twist, try Portofino. Located on the east end of the island, this waterfront restaurant overlooks the Barrier Reef at Gun Bay. With blue and white tablecloths and a candlelit outdoor patio for dining, this hotspot makes for the true island experience. Our favorite dish: angle hair tutto mare with lobster and shrimp in a garlic olive oil sauce.

Travel Tip: If you can't make it there for dinner, try their brunch. On Sundays they offer a fixed price all-you-can-eat gourmet buffet for just 16.95. Try the muscles; they're to die for!

Best Island Adventure: Stingray City

No tropical vacation would be complete without a little adventure. Take a glass-bottom boat from Rum Point to the Stingray City Sandbar and hop in the water with your tour guide. While standing on the sandbar, you will be surrounded by hundreds of sting rays whom you can feed yourself. Don't worry, these rays will not harm you, they are used to people and are non-aggressive.

Travel Tip: For a more private adventure, rent a jet ski and travel out to Stingray City yourself. Hop in the water and join a tour group or take a ride and admire the scenery.

Where to Take the Kids: Boastwain’s Beach Turtle Farm

For an experience your kids will absolutely love, take them Boatswain’s Beach Turtle Farm. Take a dip in the park’s lagoon or observe several species of sharks in the park's predator reef. Then venture over to the touch tanks where you're allowed to pick up baby sea turtles. It's educational, fun, and will keep your little ones occupied the entire day.

Travel Tip: While your kids explore the park take a seat at Schooner’s Bar and Grill. They offer some fabulous cocktails and Caribbean fare. If you're feeling a bit daring, try the tasty turtle soup.
