Casa Tua - Miami
Art-filled Mediterranean-style villa in peaceful South Beach
A welcome (and mild-mannered) rebel among the swaggering ranks of mid-fifties Floridian retro hangouts, this little peach is the sweetest boutique hotel in Miami. A restaurant, private club and hotel, the Mediterranean-styled Casa Tua tucked away in the art deco district of South Beach is relaxed, charming and will make you feel right at home. After all, it is called "Your House". -
Casu Tua - MiamiCasa Tua's excellent eatery occupies the interconnecting ground-floor rooms of the main house and serves classic Italian and Mediterranean food – chef Sergio Sigala's specialty is risotto, and there's a well-matched list of fine wines. Whether you linger at a candlelit table outside in the garden or pause in the pretty main rooms, it feels like a stylish friend's home. Another option is to hit the communal chef's table overlooking the kitchen, for quick plates of pasta. Buon appetito, indeed.

The Greenwich - New York CityDe Niro’s designer den and trattoria in TriBeCa
Built to blend in with the classic New York façades of trendy Tribeca, Robert de Niro’s Greenwich Hotel boasts beautiful bedrooms fitted with Carrara marble and Moroccan tile.Another interesting element is that the bamboo spa building was constructed nail-free by Japanese craftsmen – all encased in a classic exterior of ruddy, hand-molded brick. -
The Greenwich - New York CityLocanda Verde, the celebrated alternative to its sister restaurant, Ago, is where chef Andrew Carmellini dishes up high-end Italian comfort food – think wood-fired rabe sausage and roasted garlic chicken. And if your diet allows, definitely pig out on the melt-in-your-mouth pork cheeks. Vegetarians: if you’re blanching at all of this, be assured that the Fonduta Ravioli with wild mushrooms and parmigiano reggiano and Pumpkin Agnolotti with brown butter, sage and amaretti are just as mouthwatering.

Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, Oxfordshire, EnglandThe Manoir is the biggest and oldest house in a very small, very quiet village in Oxfordshire, and sits regally among beautiful lawns, walled 17th-century and Japanese ponds, and its own extensive herb and organic vegetable gardens, which are heavily featured on super-chef Raymond Blanc's magnificent menu. Blanc’s mission (accomplished) is to deliver the absolute best in cuisine and service in a friendly atmosphere – he certainly chose the right raw materials in Le Manoir.

Hotel St Paul - Montreal, CanadaBon vivant in Vieux Montréal
Occupying an old, bold Beaux Arts building in Montreal’s coolest quarter – the Quebec city’s old town – Hotel St. Paul is something of a trailblazer in a town swimming with bland business hotels. A warm and welcoming minimalism dominates the decor, enhanced by dramatic touches such as the fire-lit alabaster cube that lords over the lobby, and the ethereal muslin drapes that are featured in many of the rooms. -
Hotel St. Paul - Montreal, CanadaTo its edibles – this landmark boutique hotel is also home to the sultry Vauvert restaurant. Eatery du choix for the Canadian city’s high fliers and fine diners, the seasonal European bistro menu never disappoints, and the risotto has acquired a citywide reputation. We say, tuck yourselves away in the corner of the banquette row so you can see all the action.
-

Rates: Low season, CA $230–CA $409; high season, CA$279–CA$489, including breakfast but not taxes at 15.5 percent. Rooms on the penthouse floor are an extra CA$30.

Lone Star - Barbados, CarribbeanBeach shack retreat on dazzling sands.
This boutique Bajan hideaway is a luxury take on a 1950s garage, which informs its modern-day aesthetic in a big way: rooms named after cars, retro furnishings, staff clad in boiler suites – all colored in the Lone Star Restaurant & Hotel’s smart signature white and blue. -
Lone Star - Barbados, CarribbeanThe upper-level suites have bird’s-eye views of the crystalline waters; the two lower rooms are smaller, but have the advantage of being bang on the beach. In what was once the main motoring hub, the restaurant is now a permanently buzzing Barbados institution. Lined with gilt mirrors and touched with retro flashes (we love the rows of cute white ceiling fans) it serves skillful world cuisine with a Caribbean twang.

Villa Bordoni - ItalyRustic deluxe amid the green groves of Greve in Chianti.
Scottish restaurateurs Catherine and David Gardner took three years to furbish and restore Villa Bordoni, a 10-roomed villa in the rolling countryside. They have successfully filled a glaring boutique-hotel gap in a beloved holiday region. They have been careful not to create a self-conscious design hotel, offering instead a tasteful country-house hotel that is hidden away in glorious grounds. The saltwater pool set in terraced olive groves enjoys views over the Chianti hills.
