4 Ways to Shop in a Poor Economy

Save on your next shopping trip!

Sure, the economy is in the toilet and you're skimping and saving where you can, but your shirts have holes in the elbows and you’ve been wearing the same pants for days! There are ways to work around a shopping budget. Try these four tips!

1 – Buy versatile pieces.

When you’re trying to skimp when you shop, knowing what to buy is essential! Look for investment pieces that are versatile and can be worn more than once in more than one way. And don’t be scared to spend a little more. You’ll get more bang for your buck buying a little black dress than a memorable print dress on sale! Click on the video below to see how we put together 10 looks from our favorite lbd!

2 – Accessorize.

Whether you have some basics in the back of your closet or you've scrounged around some extra cash to buy something new, accessories can change a look completely. For example, a great scarf can be worn as a belt with a black dress or a headband with jeans and a tee! For more ways to wear one scarf, click on the video below!

3 – Know where to shop!

While we all love discount stores, some are better than others depending on your shopping needs! If you’re looking for trendy pieces that will last you a season, hit stores like H+M, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe and Strawberry. Remember though, these shops are often geared towards a younger demo so be careful not to buy clothes that your daughter would wear. And size up!

For great underpinnings, tank tops, tee shirts and leggings try Target, Kmart and Marshalls. And for shoes, jeans and basics you’ll wear season after season, like a black cashmere sweater or a denim jacket, hit your favorite retail and chain stores like Zara, Bloomingdales, Ann Taylor and Macy's. Your bill will be higher but your clothes will last longer!

4 – Recycle your wardrobe.

Go through your closet at least twice a year! Often times we have our favorite pieces that we wear over and over again, forgetting all about that fabulous top or that amazing skirt. Whether it’s because you’ve gained or lost a few, or trends have changed, sometimes what you hated last season might be perfect for this one! Of course, don’t forget The Style Guide’s number one closet rule – if you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it! This will give you a chance to see what you need and what you have.
