What She REALLY Wants For Valentine's Day

Gentlemen, read this before you open your wallets.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and men everywhere are procrastinating, waiting until the last minute to storm their local jewelry, lingerie and chocolate shops.

They will even wait until the only Valentine’s Day cards left will be those labeled “for your grandmother” or “for anyone” (my ex-husband actually bought me a card with “To My Beloved Grandmother” on the front because that was all that was left, and scratched out the “Grandmother” part with a marker).

Some men will fall on the other end of the spectrum, having already reserved an overpriced table at the finest restaurant, and having ordered those double-priced long-stem roses and even that diamond heart-shaped necklace.

But no matter which category you fall into, the last-minute scrambler, or the on-top-of-it big spender, I believe that the price tag associated with the holiday has marred the real reason we even celebrate it ... (that’s romance and love).

I asked some women to recall their favorite Valentine’s Day gift, and an overwhelming majority spoke of thoughtful gifts that hardly even cost any money, or evenings that were romantic and memorable.

“I came home from work and found my boyfriend had cooked me my favorite pasta, just like they make it at our favorite local Italian restaurant – he had never even cooked before! And after an amazing, candle-lit dinner, he sat me down and gave me a foot massage. And the rest of the night is history.”

In one of my favorite stories, a boyfriend scattered messages for his girlfriend so she would find them throughout the day.  "It started with a note on the nightstand, another on the bathroom mirror, another in my wallet.  I even found one at work under the keyboard - he had my co-worker plant it there.  In each note he wrote out some of our most amazing moments.  The best note I found was on the door when I came home, 'I love you more than words can ever say' - best Valentine's Day a gal could ask for." And it didn't cost him a thing.

And so, while I admit I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to cupid’s special day, and who doesn’t love being lavished with flowers and gifts, I believe men are missing the point. It isn’t about spending tons of cash on expensive jewelry, it’s about celebrating and spending time together. Bring back the romance. Put some thought behind it. Celebrate your love. And if that means spelling out “love” on the floor in diamonds - I mean rose petals - it’s the thought that counts. So, gentlemen, get to thinking - the big day will be here before you know it.
